About GWG
What is Genome Wood Group?
GWG is a Brazilian forest-biotechnology
company dedicated to developing noble tropical hardwood species.
What does forest biotechnology mean?
The application of genetic
science to the improvement of tree species, developing hybrid cultivars
such as Mogno Bahia® with measured silvicultural performance.
Where does GWG operate?
Operational base in western Bahia, serving
the whole country. Seedling logistics in partnership with Selva Florestal in
Porangatu, Goiás.
Who founded GWG?
The founding partners are Alan dos Anjos,
responsible for forest genetics and the development of Mogno Bahia®, and
Abel Ribeiro, a chemical engineer.
Why the name Genome Wood Group?
The English name reflects GWG’s
international vocation. “Genome” refers to the genetic selection applied to
timber species.
Mogno Bahia®
What is Mogno Bahia®?
An interspecific hybrid cultivar of the Meliaceae
family, resulting from the cross between Melia dubia and Melia azedarach,
developed by GWG over more than 30 years.
Is Mogno Bahia® the same as Brazilian or African mahogany?
No.
They share the same botanical family but belong to distinct genera. Mogno
Bahia® is a Brazilian hybrid cultivar developed through genetic selection,
different from traditional or imported species.
Is the Mogno Bahia® trademark registered?
Yes. Mogno Bahia® has
been a trademark registered with Brazil’s INPI since June 2025.
Why do you call Mogno Bahia® a "wood brand"?
Because the genetics,
the cultivation and the wood’s commercial destination are integrated under
a single quality standard.
What sets Mogno Bahia® apart from other Melia material?
Four
factors: early maturity, a selected genetic base, a standardized cultivation
protocol and the technical support of the Producer Program.
Does GWG develop other cultivars?
Yes, it maintains a continuous
research program in noble-timber improvement.
Cultivation & Operation
How long until Mogno Bahia® reaches the first harvest?
The first
harvest occurs in the fifth year and removes about half of the trees (417 per
hectare), producing between 100 and 120 m³/ha of Quality A wood. The
final harvest takes place in the tenth year.
How does it differ from conventional reforestation?
The GWG model
plants at reduced density (834 trees/ha) with two commercial harvests and
no thinning, versus conventional high density with multiple thinnings over
25 years.
What soil and climate does Mogno Bahia® require?
It adapts to a wide
range of well-drained tropical soils, with average rainfall between 900 and
1,800 mm per year.
What is the recommended planting spacing?
The GWG model’s
standard spacing is 3×4 meters, totaling 834 trees per hectare.
Can it be integrated into silvopastoral systems?
Yes. The reduced
density makes it easy to integrate with cattle, sheep or other livestock over
the cycle.
Can sheep and goats be integrated?
Yes. Both are viable, with goats
acting as management agents for the inter-rows.
Is there specific silvicultural management?
Yes, including scheduled
pruning and weed control, following the protocol provided to the producer.
Is it resistant to the mahogany shoot borer (Hypsipyla grandella)?
Yes.
Because it belongs to the genus Melia — not Swietenia or Khaya — it has
natural resistance to the pest.
Can the growing areas be visited?
Technical visits are arranged by prior
appointment.
Seedlings & Logistics
How do I purchase Mogno Bahia® seedlings?
Through two official
channels: directly from GWG or from Selva Florestal, the logistics partner
based in Porangatu-GO.
Do the seedlings have a genetic guarantee?
Yes. Every seedling sold
follows an internal identification and traceability protocol.
Is there delivery throughout Brazil?
Yes, to every region of the country,
with transport traceability.
Is there a minimum order?
Yes. Minimum volumes depend on the profile
and scale of the project.
What is the best planting window?
It varies by region. As a general
reference, the start of the local rainy season is recommended.
Producer Program
What is the Producer Program?
GWG’s technical ecosystem that
supports the Mogno Bahia® producer throughout the entire forest cycle.
What are the program's tiers?
Three: Essential (included with the
seedlings), Assisted and Performance (the most complete, with in-depth
support).
How do I join the Program?
It begins with requesting a technical site
assessment, GWG’s diagnosis and the formalization of the seedling order.
Does the program include technical training?
Yes. The Producer
Platform brings together a technical curriculum, silvicultural protocols and
learning materials.
Science and Sustainability
How does GWG conduct forest research?
The research combines field
genetic selection with long-term silvicultural monitoring.
Does Mogno Bahia® sequester carbon?
Yes. Like any medium-cycle
planted forest, it is an active carbon sink during growth.
Does the cultivation generate carbon credits?
Eligibility depends on the
project, methodology and certifier. GWG studies this as a complement, not
the basis of the business.
What is the environmental impact of the planting?
Well-managed
plantings of medium-cycle species contribute to soil recovery, shading,
microclimate regulation and carbon fixation.
